Polaroid Sprintscan 120 vs. Epson 1640SU

For the better part of a year I have been scanning my medium format transparencies and 35mm panoramas with an Epson 1640SU flatbed scanner.  The quality has been good enough to print up to 12x16 from 645.  The Epson was never good at all for scanning Xpan transparencies.  I needed something sharper.

For a while I was considering upgrading the Epson 1640 to the 2450 with higher dpi.  After doing more research I decided to get a dedicated MF film scanner.  Polaroid was the lowest in cost.  It was under $2000 with the rebate they were offering.

Sharpness

Sized to be the same output size.  From the upper right corner of the image.  No sharpening to either image throughout the process.  The Epson scan is on the left and the Polaroid scan is on the right.

Shadow Detail

No adjustments were made to either scan.  The Epson scan is on the left and the Polaroid scan is on the right.  There is a great deal more shadow detail in the Polaroid scans.

Below you will find full size comparisons between the Epson 1640SU and Polaroid Sprintscan 120 Film scanner.
